Formative
Summative
Once the Mars of the Mind web site is complete, designers will have the opportunity to beta
test Alpha students in the Clear Creek Independent School District. Designers felt as if the
Alpha students would be perfect models because they fall under the category of Gifted and
Talented 5th and 6th grade students, those being focused on for the lesson’s initiatives.
By completing a formative assessment, designers hope to determine the effectiveness of the web
site and to revise it where needed. All errors related to simplicity of vocabulary, context,
navigation confusion, examples as well as management procedures will be clarified.
The Mars of the Mind web site has a built in summative evaluation system. Students will
assess their learning by completing a drawing or writing based on what they may know about
Mars in the year 2005. Learners will submit their work to a gallery as well as view the works
of other students. Designers will realize whether the site is successful if work received in
the gallery substantiates that the ultimate lesson goal has been reached. With this
information, decisions may be made to determine whether or not the instruction (web site)
should remain as is or be revised in its current format.
