Day 9: Abu Simbel

The Coptic Christians have a tatoo mark on their arm.

At the market I buy some herbs saffron and cumin to bring home to remind me of the wonderful food.

On the way to Abu Simbel at least we have out tickets but I hit my leg on a chair and have a huge bump and bruise and have to ice it for the whole trip.  There is nothing to describe flying over this amazing country except that it is like flying over another world.

We arrived in Abu Simbel by plane at 8am.  The Temples of Ramses II and his wife Nefertari were moved by UNESCO to a higher point on the island and erected inside a fake cliff/mountain.  This is the most amazing feat of engineering I have ever seen. These temples are huge.  The four statues of Ramses are 64 feet high.  One is missing it's head, it lies in the sand. It is breath-taking, imposing and huge. Inside is magnificent. Many tourists. The Temple of Nefertari next door is just as amazing.  The carvings are so intricate and so well preserved.  They go into the mountain for quite a ways. Nefertari was beautiful, "she for whom the sun shines" it says on her temple. We can't wait to see her restored tomb in Luxor.

We bought a few scarabs and bracelets for gifts at the airport. Had lunch on the Nile in Aswan on the Panorama Restaurant.  The owner was an Omar Shariff lookalike and had a cool rock collection. the food was Nubian, the mousaka very good and the bread wonderful.  Nap after lunch.  Then to the Museum, nice job they did on that museum.  Then back for dinner, did the buffet with no ill effects.  Mailed some postcards, finished Death on the Nile.  We are off to Kom Ombo and Edfu by car tomorrow with the caravan for safety purposes on the way to Luxor!! There is SO much to see and do in Luxor we are lucky we have the whole week ahead of us! Tombs, temples and light shows.  Shopping and markets and Camel Rides!!
